John Cyprien may come from a small school, but both his game and talent resonate in a big way.  As a result, chatter of Cyprien being a first-round pick has gained a lot of momentum in the weeks leading up to the NFL Draft.

The versatile safety leaves Florida International as the school’s all-time leader in tackles, dominating the Sun Belt Conference in the process.  His numbers this past season as a senior are outstanding, finishing with 93 tackles, 3.5 for a loss, five passes defensed, four interceptions and one forced fumble.

An ultra-athletic 6-foot-0, 217-pounder who embraces the physical nature of his position, Cyprien gives 100% effort on every down. Playing with urgency to make a major impact, he’s constantly flying to the ball whether in run support or against the pass.  He’s displayed strong ball skills with the ability to quickly pluck the football out of the air as well as use his body to dislodge it from the receiver.  Equally important, he rises to the occasion against the top teams, having some of his strongest games against the best teams on the schedule.

On the flip side, some question Cyprien’s true range.  Also, he may be too aggressive for his own good at times as his eagerness to make a big-time play ends up backfiring by putting him in a poor position.

Nonetheless, Cyprien is a high-motor safety who is one of the hardest hitting players available in the entire draft. While he may have entered his collegiate career as a relative unknown, he’s left an indelible mark that has made scouts take notice of him as he’s on the brink of joining the NFL.
