Prospect Profile: Joel Bitonio

Posted Apr 21, 2014

Learn more about Nevada offensive lineman Joel Bitonio.

In order to familiarize fans with some of the top names in the 2014 NFL Draft, Chargers.com will be highlighting a different prospect each weekday leading up to the first day of the draft on May 8th.

We continue the series with a scouting report of Nevada’s Joel Bitonio.

Name: Joel Bitonio
School: Nevada
Height: 6-4
Weight: 302 pounds
Position: Offensive Lineman

Joel Bitonio was a prospect most fans didn’t know much about.

Then the NFL Scouting Combine took place.

Showing brute force and uncanny athleticism, Bitonio elevated himself into one of the stars of the annual showcase.  As a result, he now finds himself on the verge of being an early selection in the NFL Draft.

Bitonio’s 4.97 40-yard dash was the fourth fastest of all linemen, while his 32.0 inch vertical jump and 114.0 inch long jump each ranked second. The Nevada star also excelled during on field workouts, looking quick and nimble despite his hulking frame.   That performance, combined with his strong football IQ, ideal character and productive collegiate career, endeared the Wolfpack star to the football world.

Although he played solely offensive tackle in college, many project Bitonio as an interior guard at the next level.  At 6-4, 302-pounds, he is a tough, snarling player who engulfs defenders until the whistle is blown.  An excellent finisher, he is a prototypical barrel-chested blocker who gives it his all on each and every play.

Bitonio started 36 of 51 career games, and really came into his own as a senior when he was a First Team All-MWC selection.  While there may be a learning curve if he does indeed kick inside to guard, he has all the tools to be an impact lineman for the long haul.

Combine Metrics
40-yard Dash: 4.97
Bench Press: 22 reps
Vertical Jump: 32.0 inches
Broad Jump: 114.0 inches
