LSU has been a hotbed for defensive backs in recent drafts.  That trend figures to continue with the addition this year of highly-touted free safety Eric Reid. In fact, Reid’s stock has risen so rapidly in recent weeks that he is amongst the 23 players who will be in attendance at this year’s NFL Draft.

The 6-foot-1, 213-pounder is fresh off a stellar 2012 campaign where he finished with a career-high 91 tackles, seven passes defensed and two interceptions on his way to earning First Team All-SEC honors.

Reid followed up his impressive junior year with an equally impressive performance at the Scouting Combine.  He recorded the best vertical jump and broad jump amongst all safeties, leaping 40.5 inches and 134.0 inches respectively.  In addition, he ran the fifth fastest time in the 40-yard dash with a time of 4.53 seconds.

Instinctive in coverage with a cerebral take on the passing game, Reid reads the quarterback very well and usually gets a good jump on the ball.  He also likes to mix it up with receivers and is physical with them in coverage.  Reid’s physicality isn’t limited to just the passing game, however, as he loves to run downhill against the run and explode into the ball carrier.

Similar to other safeties in this draft class, Reid’s aggressive nature also turns out to be his own worst enemy at times.  It can leave him out of position, and he doesn’t have the natural recovery speed to get back to where he’s supposed to be.  Nonetheless, Reid possesses a strong combination of physicality and athleticism to be an impact player in the NFL right away.

Combine Metrics
40-yard Dash: 4.53
Bench Press: 17
Vertical Jump: 40.5 inches
Broad Jump: 134.0 inches
20-yard Shuffle: 4.22
