Prospect Profile: Demarcus Lawrence

Posted May 1, 2014

Learn more about Boise State defensive end Demarcus Lawrence.

In order to familiarize fans with some of the top names in the 2014 NFL Draft, Chargers.com will be highlighting a different prospect each weekday leading up to the first day of the draft on May 8th.

We continue the series with a scouting report of Boise State’s Demarcus Lawrence.

Name: Demarcus Lawrence
School: Boise State
Height: 6-3
Weight: 251 pounds
Position: Defensive End

Demarcus Lawrence has taken a unique path to the precipice of the NFL.

He began his career playing defensive end, offensive tackle and tight end in high school before attending Butler Community College solely as a defensive end.  Following one season in which he recorded 66 tackles, 27.0 tackles for loss and 10 sacks as a redshirt freshman, he was a highly coveted transfer recruit.  Lawrence elected to attend Boise State over universities such as South Carolina and Oklahoma, and it’s hard to argue with his decision.  He made an immediate impact as a sophomore in 2012, registering 48 tackles, 13.5 tackles for loss, 9.5 sacks, four forced fumbles, one touchdown and one blocked kick.  Lawrence followed that up with another spectacular season as a junior, notching 72 tackles, 20.5 tackles for loss, 10.5 sacks, three forced fumbles and two blocked kicks in 2013.

An incredibly versatile defensive end, Lawrence has the ability to attack offenses in a number of ways.  He possesses a strong initial burst off the snap and uses a bevy of pass rush moves to reach the quarterback.  Lawrence is also routinely praised for quick, violent hands he uses to shed blockers with ease.

Critics lament a lack of straight ahead speed while others worry he may prove to be too much of a tweener.  Nonetheless, with comparisons to Jason Babin, Lawrence possesses the raw skills and versatility to be an impact player in the NFL.
