Players with versatility are a hot commodity in the NFL these days.  To that end, defensive end prospect Datone Jones is a real up and comer, able to play in both 3-4 and 4-3 defenses, as well as inside as a defensive tackle and at his primary position as a defensive end.

Jones really came into his own as a senior, compiling his personal best season while also making waves as one of the nation’s top defensive linemen. He recorded a career high with 62 tackles, 19 of them  for a loss, while chipping in with six sacks to earn All Pac-12 honors.

Equally adept at using his athleticism to finesse his way past linemen and  his brute strength to power his way over them, Jones is very disruptive in the backfield.  Scouts are quick to praise him for being a dependable  teammate and vocal leader in the huddle and on the field. Also blessed with an ideal frame for his position, Jones is still filling out his 6-foot-4, 283-pound frame, which will only serve to aid him as he makes the leap to the NFL.

The biggest knock against Jones thus far has been his inconsistency. Parts of games he will be the most dominant player on the field, while other times he is seemingly invisible.  Nonetheless, Jones has tremendous upside and once he is able to perform on a steady, reliable basis, he should be an effective defensive end for years to come.
