In order to familiarize fans with some of the top names in the 2014 NFL Draft, Chargers.com will be highlighting a different prospect each weekday leading up to the first day of the draft on May 8th.
We continue the series with a scouting report of Penn State’s DaQuan Jones.
School: Penn State
Weight: 322 pounds
Position: Defensive Tackle
All it takes is one look at DaQuan Jones to know exactly how he fits in a defense. Big, broad and powerful, he is built like a prototypical defensive tackle. More specifically, he looks the part of a massive nose tackle.
At 6-4, 322-pounds, Jones is a stout presence in the middle of the defensive line. He is near impossible to move when he anchors himself properly, but he is also a skilled pass rusher. Jones possesses a powerful bull-rush that overpowers offensive linemen, allowing him to routinely make plays in the backfield.
Jones improved dramatically each season at Penn State. He went from a seldom used reserve as a freshman and sophomore to a solid contributor as a junior before blossoming into a star last year as a senior. Jones posted 56 tackles, a team-high 11.5 tackles for loss and 3.0 sacks in 2013.
Stamina and conditioning have been issues in the past for Jones, but he greatly improved in that area prior to last year shedding almost 25 pounds in the offseason. Overall, he is a well-respected teammate and college captain who figures to have a productive career in the NFL.
