Prospect Profile: Cordarrelle Patterson

In order to familiarize fans with some of the top names in the 2013 NFL Draft, Chargers.com will be highlighting a different prospect each weekday leading up to the first day of the draft on April 25th.

We continue the series with a scouting report of Tennessee wide receiver Cordarrelle Patterson.

Cordarrelle Patterson’s collegiate career was anything but ordinary.  In fact, he faced many obstacles on his way to being the top-flight wide receiver prospect he is today.  Still, considering he is on the verge of being an early pick in April’s NFL Draft, chances are he’d do it all over again if given the chance.

A high school standout that graduated in 2008, Patterson missed an entire year of football while attending North Carolina Tech in 2010, mainly due to academic issues.  The next year, he enrolled at little known Hutchinson Community College in Kansas and proceeded to torch the competition, setting a number of school records on his way to becoming the number one ranked JUCO player in the United States. 

Highly coveted, he elected to go to Tennessee where he played just one single season at the major FBS level.  But the increased talent level only served to bring out the best in him.  As a junior, he caught 46 balls for 778 yards and five touchdowns.  The Vols even used him as a running back and he thrived there as well, churning out 208 yards and three touchdowns on 25 carries from the tailback position. If that wasn’t enough, Patterson lit it up as a return specialist. He returned 24 kickoffs for 671 yards and a TD while bringing back four punts for 101 yards and a score.  As a result, he set a Tennessee record for 1,858 all-purpose yards.

Patterson’s strongest asset is his incredible athleticism.  Blessed with tremendous speed, he is able to create separation on deep passes which helps make him a favorite target of quarterbacks. 

Overall, there is a lot to like about Cordarrelle Patterson.  His ability to learn and grow from each challenge and ability to perform at each level makes him one of the most intriguing wide receiver prospects available this season.
