A hard hitting thumper, Calvin Pryor is one of the fiercest tacklers available in the 2013 draft.  Combined with his tremendous instincts and natural skill, it’s no wonder he’s being mentioned among the top safety prospects this year.

Over three standout seasons with the Louisville Cardinals, Pryor amassed 218 tackles, 18 passes defensed, nine forced fumbles, seven interceptions and two sacks.  He was a First Team All-American Athletic Conference selection in 2013 totaling 75 tackles as a junior, ranking second on the team.   The 5-11, 207-pounder posted three double-digit tackling games during his final season at Louisville, with his most dominant performance being a 14-tackle, one interception effort in a rousing win over Rutgers.

It’s no secret that many regard Pryor’s best asset to be his bone-rattling hits. In fact, NFL.com named him “arguably the most violent hitter in this year's draft class.”  But while that’s where his bread is buttered, he possesses many other attributes that make him an ideal safety prospect. As mentioned earlier, he has great instincts combined with an astute football mind.  He covers a wide range when dropping back patrolling the field, while in the run game he is a torpedo who flocks to the ball.

The main worry according to some analysts is that Prior’s best attribute may at times be a hindrance. His punishing tackling style may at times be seen as too aggressive, which could draw penalties at the NFL level.  However, Pryor overall is zooming up draft charts as he garners comparisons to Ed Reed and Antrel Rolle.  If those comparisons hold some truth, he’ll present nightmares for offensive coordinators for years to come.
