Prospect Profile: C.J. Mosley

Posted Apr 10, 2014

Learn more about Alabama inside linebacker C.J. Mosley.

In order to familiarize fans with some of the top names in the 2014 NFL Draft, Chargers.com will be highlighting a different prospect each weekday leading up to the first day of the draft on May 8th.

We continue the series with a scouting report of Alabama’s C.J. Mosley.

Name: C.J. Mosley
School: Alabama
Height: 6-2
Weight: 234 pounds
Position: Inside Linebacker

Playing for perennial powerhouse Alabama, C.J. Mosley established himself as an elite inside linebacker prospect.  After all, the senior took home some of the top awards available in college football while steering the Crimson Tide to a pair of BCS National Championships under his watch.

The leader of a stifling defense, Mosley led the team with 108 tackles, 9.0 tackles for loss and 10 quarterback hits as a senior.  As a result, he took home the coveted Dick Butkus Award as the nation’s top linebacker, was a finalist for the Bednarik Award as the country’s top defensive player and was a First-Team All-SEC selection.

At 6-2, 234-pounds, Mosley possesses the prototypical frame for an inside linebacker.  He is a sure tackler who repeatedly issues bone-rattling hits and routinely punishes ball carriers.  Mosley has terrific range, which allows him to roam sideline to sideline against the run while being equally effective dropping back into coverage.  He pairs this special skillset with tremendous instincts and strong leadership qualities, making him an extremely dangerous defender.

If there is a knock on Mosley it may be some concerns due to injuries.  He’s been felled by elbow, shoulder and hip ailments over the years, which has caused him to miss some games.  However, overall Mosley is a well-regarded prospect who many analysts feel has multiple Pro Bowls in his future.
