Prospect Profile: Bruce Ellington

Posted May 6, 2014

Learn more about South Carolina wide receiver Bruce Ellington.

In order to familiarize fans with some of the top names in the 2014 NFL Draft, Chargers.com will be highlighting a different prospect each weekday leading up to the first day of the draft on May 8th.

We continue the series with a scouting report of South Carolina’s Bruce Ellington.

Name: Bruce Ellington
School: South Carolina
Height: 5-9
Weight: 197 pounds
Position: Wide Receiver

Teams are always looking for explosive playmakers on offense, and Bruce Ellington has proven to be exactly that.

The South Carolina wide receiver recorded 106 catches for 1,586 yards and 16 touchdowns over three seasons.  He is fresh off a dynamic 2013 campaign that saw him snare 59 catches for 775 yards and eight touchdowns. Perhaps most important, he rose to the occasion in big games when the team needed him the most. Ellington caught six balls for a career-high 140 yards and two touchdowns.  Not only that, the wideout actually threw a touchdown pass as well demonstrating his versatility.  Ellington also proved to be dangerous on special teams over his collegiate career as well.

The 5-9, 197-pounder is an electric athlete who also started three years for South Carolina’s basketball team at point guard until he declared for the NFL Draft.  He separates quickly from corners with his blazing speed and has a quick burst off the snap. Fearless going over the middle, Ellington is a home run threat every time he gets his hands on the ball.  He is also a tremendous competitor that flashes natural hands.

Ellington has an impressive muscular build but is on the shorter side and needs to be a crisper route runner in order to utilize his vast talent.  With comparisons to Green Bay Packer Randall Cobb, Ellington should have a chance to make an impact relatively early in his NFL career.

Combine Metrics
