When asked who the big winners were at the Scouting Combine in February, one name that will almost universally be mentioned is Brandin Cooks. His performance, combined with an outstanding collegiate career, has the wide receiver on the precipice of being a high selection in this May’s draft.

Cooks ran a blazing 4.33 40-yard dash, which ranked second among every single player in attendance.  The explosion he played with at Oregon State was on full display in drills and testing.  As a result, many respected media analysts said they were going to reevaluate the wideout, moving him up on their draft board.

Cooks had a terrific junior season, setting single-season Pac-12 records with 128 catches and 1,730 yards.  He led the nation in receiving yards and was second in receptions, as well as chipping in 16 touchdowns.  Not surprisingly, he was the 2013 Biletnikoff Award winner for the nation’s top wide receiver, a first-team All-American and a first-team All-Pac-12 selection.  For his career, he caught 226 balls for 3,272 yards and 24 touchdowns. Cooks was also an effective runner in select situations, carrying the ball 32 times for 217 yards (6.8 yards per carry) and two touchdowns in 2013.

The 5-10, 189-pounder is a special athlete in the mold of Tavon Austin, the first wide receiver selected in the 2013 NFL Draft.  Lightning quick in and out of his cuts and with the ball, he can turn a short pass into a long gain.   With his smallish size, some project him to play mainly in the slot, an area he thrived in with his electric playmaking ability.   The Stockton, CA native also excels as a returner on special teams.

With all of Cooks' unique talents and success, it’s no wonder he is one of the fastest risers this year.
