Coach Norv Turner finished day two of Chargers minicamp by putting his players through a physically demanding workout this evening.  By the end of the evening, sweat visibly poured through the facemasks off opposing lineman.

The practice began with individual team workouts. Cris Dishman, assistant secondary coach, ran a coverage drill that saw cornerbacks and safeties run backwards through cones then quickly turn for a simulated interception.

The defensive line worked on a series of exercises that focused on penetrating the offensive line. Rookies OLB Melvin Ingram (round one) and DE Kendall Reyes (round two) were fluid throughout.

A five-on-five drill followed. QB Charlie Whitehurst took all the snaps on one side of the field, while QB Philip Rivers worked with QB Jarrett Lee (undrafted, LSU) on the other side. Lee has mostly been an observer through OTAs and minicamp so this allowed him to get in some necessary work.  Meanwhile, Whitehurst had a few miscues but did complete several long passes.

During the first full scrimmage Rivers completed quick short passes to WRs Robert Meachem and Eddie Royal and RB Ryan Mathews. This could be an early indication that Rivers will have several safe options who are capable of eating up yards after the catch.

Full team kickoff returns were worked next. CB Antoine Cason (1), WR Richard Goodman (2), RB Michael Hayes (2), WR Roscoe Parrish (2), WR Michael Spurlock, and CB DeAndre Presley (1) took turns as a returner.

Hayes (undrafted, Houston), who played an active role during OTAs, touched the ball several more times throughout practice.  Come training camp, Hayes may be given an equal opportunity to compete for a roster spot with RB Edwin Baker (round seven).

Next, the offense and defense met up again for a series of full scrimmages. First down and 10 situations were worked for 5 minutes, third and eight for 15 minutes and red zone situations for 20 minutes.

As a whole, the secondary had an extremely strong night. It took nearly 15 minutes for the offense to breakthrough with a touchdown in the red zone. CB Marcus Gilchrist flew around the field and broke up several plays. CB Quentin Jammer stifled WR Malcom Floyd several times. And CB Shareece Wright picked off a Whitehurst pass.

Whitehurst finally broke through with a long completion over the middle to Goodman in the end zone. Goodman has also caught several other passes during the two evening scrimmages and was a leading receiver in OTAs. Goodman did not catch a pass last season as a kick returner, but could potentially be worked into the offense this year.

At the end of practice, a few goal-line plays were run and the evening concluded with Rivers finding WR Robert Meachem for a 2-yard touchdown.
