The Chargers began their second day of minicamp with a one hour walkthrough practice on Wednesday morning.

“It is more of a teaching tempo,” Coach Norv Turner said. “That is the way the CBA structured minicamp and that will be the format that will be used in training camp.”

The practice began with a 20 minute individual period. Wide receivers coach Charlie Joiner carried a play sheet and worked closely with the rookie receivers to ensure they were running their appropriate routs.

Rich Bisaccia, assistant head coach - special teams coordinator, ran the second segment of practice which largely focused on blocking assignments during kickoffs. The slow walkthrough approach allowed Bisaccia to demonstrate how a play should develop.

The coverage team was instructed to jog in their lanes and stop when they were picked up by a blocker. The return team’s job was to set a trap on the coverage unit in order to create an escape lane for the kick returner. WR Richard Goodman handled the majority of the returns and WR Michael Spurlock had a few touches.

Bisaccia also ran a blocking assignment drill for punts.

The offense and defense then worked separately for a period. During this time QB Philip Rivers once again had fun switching to cornerback today after lining up as a safety yesterday.  Rivers provided a defensive look for the second and third-string offense.

RB Ronnie Brown had several reps in this period and throughout practice. He even made a nice one-handed catch as a receiver. RB Curtis Brinkley is still very much in the mix even with the addition of Brown signing during OTAs.

The practice concluded with the offense and defense performing a walkthrough of various plays together. Third down situations once again dominated this segment.

Former San Diego State Head Coach Ted Tollner was an invited guest and observed practice.
