The San Diego Chargers wrapped up minicamp with a two hour practice this afternoon. The final workout before training camp starts in late July saw a mix of competitive play and meticulous coaching sessions.

Rookies and second year players took center stage during the first scrimmage of the day. QB Jarrett Lee (undrafted, LSU) got off to a bumpy start, but it gave him his first real opportunity to scrimmage in front of veterans.

SS Corey Lynch (undrafted, Appalachian State) jumped in front of a pass from Lee but missed what should have been an interception. A few plays later ILB Andrew Gachkar, a second year vet, intercepted Lee and ran down the sideline for what would have been a touchdown.

On the flip side, Lee did complete a few nice passes including a diving catch by WR Paul Cox and a phenomenal one-handed grab by TE Kory Sperry.

During this period, CB Arthur Hobbs (undrafted, Nebraska Kearney) was criticized for poor coverage on a pass play in which CB Antoine Cason took Hobbs aside and spent a few minutes to coach him up.

QB Philip Rivers ran the first-team onto the field showing the young guns how things are done. However, the secondary picked up where they left off on Wednesday evening winning the majority of the snaps. SS Atari Bigby and CB Marcus Gilchrist played particularly well.

QB Charlie Whitehurst had success moving the ball throughout practice. WRs Richard Goodman, Michael Spurlock, and Mike Willie all caught several passes from Whitehurst. RBs Edwin Baker (round seven) and Curtis Brinkley also saw significant reps with the second-team.

K Nick Novak took all the reps during a field goal drill. He was five-for-five with kicks from 45, 47, 51, 51, and 54 yards out.

WR Eddie Royal, CB DeAndre Presley, and WR Michael Spurlock took turns fielding punts from P Mike Scifres.

A red zone drill saw a series of plays run from inside the 10 yard line. Rivers threw touchdowns to RB Ronnie Brown and WR Malcom Floyd and then scampered in for a score on a 6-yard quarterback keeper.

Practice concluded with multiple positions running in the hurry up offense. With haste, Rivers moved the ball down the field completing passes to TE Antonio Gates and WR Malcom Floyd. RB Ryan Mathews also had several touches. The first drive came to a halt when S Darrell Stuckey batted a pass into the air that was intercepted by Bigby. Rivers finished his next drive with a touchdown pass to WR Robert Meachem.

Whitehurst had two successful hurry up drives, with touchdown passes to WRs Spurlock and Willie.

Note: FB Jacob Hester left practice with an injury to his left shoulder.
