Philip Rivers: "We've Progressed So Quickly"

Posted Jun 3, 2013

Quarterback Philip Rivers is quickly adjusting to all the new changes surrounding the San Diego Chargers.

Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers knew this offseason would be different than in years past. With a new coaching staff and general manager at the helm, Rivers knew he had to adjust to a new playbook and new teammates. But as the beginning of the season nears, he’s gotten increasingly comfortable with all the changes.

“I can see a big improvement just in the level of comfort from day one until now, but still a long ways to go from feeling like I want to feel when we take the field over at Qualcomm,” Rivers said. “It’s definitely headed in the right direction.”

Monday offered the Chargers another day of OTA’s before next week’s minicamp. After a week off, Rivers felt the team picked up where it left off.

“It was good,” Rivers said. “When you take 10 days off or something like that, it always takes you a little bit to get back into the flow. I thought for the most part we picked up where we left off. We’re still improving. The biggest thing is we only have about seven or eight more days together before we have the break and before you know it we’ll be in training camp. I feel like we are moving at a pretty good pace. One thing that we’ve been used to around here is the high volume. This has certainly been new, so small volume has felt like a lot, but I thought we moved at a fast pace. Hats off to the rest of the guys, they’ve really picked it up super fast and really dove right in and have been hungry to learn every little thing. It’s one thing if I’m trying to learn it all, but everyone else offensively has really taken the bull by the horn. It’s been good to see and I think that’s why we’ve progressed so quickly.”

Rivers admits the limited practices have not allowed the team to label itself yet, but there is time before the regular season begins with training camp and preseason yet to roll around.

“I think we’re still kind of finding who we’re going to be,” Rivers said. “You have a new offense and then you have a lot of guys who haven’t been together a whole lot, so our personality, our makeup, all of that is still kind of taking shape.”

Chargers head coach Mike McCoy thinks Rivers has done well so far adjusting and looks to add more to the quarterback’s plate in the near future.

“We are going to keep tweaking things as we go,” McCoy said. “We’ve thrown a ton at him and that was the plan.  Throw as much at him before they go on vacation here next week and just kind of figure out not only what does Philip like, but what else do the players do best. But he’s done a phenomenal job. He loves the game the way he approaches it every day. We’re just going to keep piling on and see what we can do and let everyone else learn as fast as we can.  But we move at his tempo.”
