Philip Rivers Named NFL Comeback Player of Year

Posted Feb 1, 2014

Philip Rivers was named the NFL Comeback Player of the Year Saturday night.

Heading into last season, it seemed everyone wanted to talk about Philip Rivers.  Nationwide, everyone wondered how he would respond to new leadership after his play admittedly dipped over the previous two seasons.

It seemed everywhere you went people had questions regarding the prolific passer.  That is at least everywhere except Chargers Park.  General Manager Tom Telesco, Head Coach Mike McCoy and the rest of the Bolts repeatedly praised Rivers, predicting big things ahead for him in 2013. Sure enough they were right as number 17 had a career year in his 10th season.

As such, Rivers was recognized for his standout season and was awarded the AP Comeback Player of the Year Saturday night.

This past season, Rivers set a new team record with a career-best and NFL-Leading 69.5 completion percentage.  He was successful on 378-of-544 attempts, and his 378 completions were a team record. Rivers also threw for 4,478 yards (third highest of his career) and 32 touchdowns (second most) with only 11 interceptions.  He posted a career and team record-tying passer rating of 105.5, which is a mark almost 10 points higher than his 96.0 career passer rating.

Rivers joined some elite company by extending his team record streak of 25-plus touchdown seasons to six, becoming just the third QB in NFL history to do so.  He also threw for over 4,000 yards for the fifth time in his career to become only the sixth in NFL history with at least five 4,000-plus yard seasons.

Including Rivers, the five most recent winners of the award include Peyton Manning, Matthew Stafford, Michael Vick and Tom Brady.  He is the second Charger to be named Comeback Player of the Year after Drew Brees won it in 2004.
