This season, though, he’s faced with more changes than ever before.Photo Gallery: Philip Rivers at Training Camp |First Day of Training Camp | More Photos
With a new coaching staff in place, he’s had to adjust to new playbooks, new terminology and overall, a new way of doing things. Nonetheless, Rivers is embracing each and every change, and in normal Rivers fashion is determined to succeed.
So just exactly how comfortable does Rivers feel with that new terminology?
“I would like to think I’m going to be even more comfortable in six weeks when we get to the opener once we get a few games under our belt, but I feel super confident in speaking it all the time,” he said. “There for a while I would say this is our old six route or speaking what we used to call it. And now I am able to just call it and see it clearly when I hear it without having to translate it back to the old. So it’s been fun. It’s been a challenge but it’s been a lot of fun.”
Equally important for Rivers is that he not only has a firm grasp on all the changes, but the entire offense does as well. So far, he believes the team has picked it up at a rapid pace adding even more encouragement for him. .
“It’s coming together nicely,” he said. “And it’s really a credit to the guys offensively what they’ve learned. You know, I can learn it and call the plays and all that, but everybody has to know what to do and what it means. Our offensive guys have really bought in. And obviously that’s key. They’ve bought in, they’ve learned it, they’re excited about it and it’s been good so far.”
As a result, Rivers is pleased with how the team did on the first day back after a lengthy hiatus. He said day one of training camp was a success as they continue to build upon what they have already learned.
“It was good to be back,” he said. “You know, you had a five week or so break, but I think in a lot of ways we picked up where we left off. You don’t want to start over. You want to build on what we got going in the OTAs and I think we did that. I mean, it’s typical first day kinks, but all in all I think it was a good start.”
