He’ll be spending at least the next four here as well.

The Chargers re-signed their kicker on Tuesday to a long contract, and no one is happier about that than Novak.

“First off I want to thank the Spanos family, Mr. (Tom) Telesco, Coach (Mike) McCoy and the entire Chargers organization for re-signing me for four more years,” he said.  “I look forward to working with (Special Teams) Coach (Kevin) Spencer.  He’s spent 30-plus years in the game and has a wealth of knowledge.  He’s very good at what he does so I’m excited to work with him on a daily basis.”

Novak is also excited to continue working with his special teams partners, punter Mike Scifres and long snapper Mike Windt, who re-signed with the club on Saturday.

“It was really important I think that all of us on special teams stayed together,” he said. “It was important to keep that continuity we’ve built.  We have a great working relationship and the rapport that we have is so good.  I don’t think people understand how important the holding position is, and Mike Scifres is the best in the NFL at that job.  And he’s also obviously the best punter in the league.  So I’m happy to have all of us together.”

Novak joined the Bolts in Week 4 last season after an injury to Nate Kaeding, and he performed so well the team chose to keep him as their starting kicker when Kaeding was healthy.  Novak converted 18 of 20 attempts for a 90-percent clip (the third-highest for a season in team history) with a long of 51 yards.  His only two misses came beyond 50 yards.  The year prior, he kicked in 15 games for the Chargers after Kaeding was injured in Week 1 and made 27 of 34 kicks for a 79.4-percent conversion rate.

But beyond anything else, Novak is excited to stay in San Diego and kick for the team he grew up rooting for.

“This has been a childhood dream of mine since I was a kid,” he said. “Growing up here through the 80s and early 90s I watched Kellen Winslow, Charlie Joiner, Dan Fouts, Stan Humphries and all the greats.  So to be wearing the same uniform they did, it’s special.”

Still, Novak has only one goal in mind as he continues his career here in San Diego – winning a Super Bowl.

“I’m ready to get to work toward the collective goal of winning a championship,” he said. “I want to accomplish that and deliver a championship to San Diego.”
