Nick Hardwick Blog: I Feel Reinvigorated

Posted Aug 13, 2013

Nick Hardwick provides today's blog during training camp.

I have to say that so far training camp is going really well. It’s a hard working bunch of guys we’ve got here, and the coaches are pushing us to the limit every day.  It’s making us grow and they are keeping the pressure on us, which is good because on the offensive line, you’ve got to continue to grow.  You have to build as an individual and a unit because we want to grow into something that is considered the strong point of this team.

We do a lot of things to build chemistry along the line.  We eat every meal together during training camp and we’ve done a lot more this year than we’ve done in the past getting together outside of the facility.  The guys went out to a movie the other day and we’ll go out to eat, so there’s a lot of interaction.  We’ve become a really close group in the limited time we’ve been together.   But we have to keep building off that.  We need to know where everyone is going to be during a play in every situation.  We’re building that trust.

This is my 10th season and it’s kind of nice to have a different head coach because it reinvigorates you.  I’ve always been a hard worker on the field and in the classroom, but I am really paying extra attention in the meetings.  I’m learning new techniques and really have to work my tail off to make sure I can master them and get the system down.  In the past I’ve been in the same system and your mind kind of naturally heads in a different direction because you know what you’re going to do every play.  Now I have to think about everything that is going on around me and concentrate even harder. It’s new and it’s fresh and it’s exciting.

One thing I love about Coach McCoy is how much he emphasizes family.  It’s really nice to see my wife Jayme and son Hudson at the end of practices. It’s great that coach wants the families to be involved by stressing a family friendly environment.  The family tent is bigger than it’s been in the past and he’s asked guys to bring their families out here.  And it means so much after a hard day at practice to see my family for even 20 or 30 minutes.  It makes training camp easier to get through.

Finally, it’s been great to see the way the fans have embraced this team.  It’s been exciting for everyone.  What I hear in talking to the fans is that everyone is really excited about the changes that have come this season.  We just hope to give you the product you’re looking for and push it to make a great run.
