The Chargers entered March with a new defensive coordinator (Greg Manusky), a new special teams coach (Rich Bisaccia) and a new tight ends coach (Jason Michael) while secondary coach Steve Wilks has added assistant head coach to his job.
The coaches already have participated in offseason planning and the process of preparing for the NFL Draft.
“It’s been outstanding,” Head Coach Norv Turner said. “Our coaches have been meeting and preparing for all the things we have to do in the offseason.”
Manusky, San Francisco’s defensive coordinator the last four seasons, ran a 3-4 scheme with the 49ers and coached linebackers in San Diego’s 3-4 defense from 2002-06.
Michael, who finished the season as San Francisco’s quarterbacks coach, worked as quality control under Turner in ’06 and has spent time in offenses similar to San Diego’s.
That’s allowed them to assimilate well, grasping things like the Chargers’ terminology without difficulty. That was a consideration at the time of the hires.
“They understand what they’re doing quickly,” Turner said.

Jason Witten of the Dallas Cowboys won at 23.7 percent.
Gates, who caught 50 passes for 782 yards and 10 touchdowns in just 10 games, finished ahead of San Francisco’s Vernon Davis, Oakland’s Zach Miller, Jacksonville’s Marcedes Lewis and Atlanta’s Tony Gonzalez.
Add it to the list of recognition for Gates, who also made the Pro Bowl and earned second-team All-Pro honors behind Witten.
