New arrivals catch on fast

Posted Sep 5, 2010

Receiver Patrick Crayton, cornerback Fred Bennett and offensive tackle Adam Terry all practiced for the Chargers on Sunday. The indication is it won’t take them long to be ready to play.

SAN DIEGO – Patrick Crayton arrived in San Diego on Saturday morning, threw on some shorts and ran routes at Chargers Park with Philip Rivers that day.

Then he spent three and a half hours in a crash-course playbook session with receivers coach Charlie Joiner. Throw in six seasons of NFL experience in a comparable system and it’s not a surprise that Crayton feels confident he can be ready for the Monday night opener in Kansas City next week.

The extra day helps, but the 6-foot, 205-pound receiver will concentrate on building a connection with Rivers and learning the Chargers’ terminology in hopes of making an impact during the season opener.

“He has to get used to the way I run my routes and where I’m going to be,” Crayton said. “I’ve got to get used to him as well. That’s the point of getting on the same page.”

The team kept only four wide receivers on the 53-man roster, but Rivers figures to throw to his three tight ends and four backs as well.

“You look at the past few years, in many cases we’ve played (with) four guys at that position,” Rivers said. “(Crayton) has played at a high level. He adds another dimension to our receiving corps. I feel great about our group and I feel even better now.”

Cornerback Fred Bennett and tackle Adam Terry also practiced with San Diego for the first time.

Bennett played in the preseason finale at San Francisco and made an interception. Head Coach Norv Turner gave him a good review Sunday on the practice field and also said Terry, a 6-foot-8, 335-pound offensive tackle, proved he can be ready soon as well.

Terry played for Turner in the 2005 Senior Bowl and recalled some of that system.

“He’s a very sharp guy and he picked it up awfully quickly today,” Turner said.

COUNTDOWN: The season starts in eight days.

The roster might get a minor tweak or two early in the season, but for the most part it’s complete, Turner said, allowing the team to focus all of its energy on AFC West rival Kansas City.

“It feels great to have our roster set,” Turner said. “There is an obvious sense of urgency when you start preparing for your first regular season game.”

HEALTHY: “We’re very healthy,” said Turner. “One of the things that’s important to me is that we get great work this week but that we are fresh for the opening game because I know we’re not going to lack energy.

“There’s going to be great excitement about playing. If we make sure we’re fresh, we’ll go out and play at a high level.”

TELETHON: The Chargers will participate in a telethon to raise money for the Muscular Distrophy Association on Monday.

The telethon will be broadcast on KUSI in San Diego from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Steve Gregory, Eric Weddle, Vaughn Martin and Jacques Cesaire will participate, as well as six Charger Girls and members of the Chargers Backers.

This is the seventh year the Chargers organization has participated in this telethon.

PRACTICE WEATHER: Sunny, 70 degrees.
