New Addition to D-Line Likes Bolts' Scheme

Defensive lineman Doug Worthington feels blessed to be in San Diego.

The San Diego Chargers added to their defensive line depth on Monday announcing they’ve signed Doug Worthington, a three-year veteran who can play both defensive tackle and end. Prior to his release last week he had been with the Washington Redskins since 2011.

“It’s a blessing to be here,” he said after his first practice as a Charger.  “Getting put on the street after the first preseason game was shocking and heartbreaking having been there for three years.  But I got back in the lab, worked out and my agent stayed on top of it.  I had a few teams interested.  I had a workout with the Patriots, but San Diego was the best fit for me.  So it’s a blessing.  The coaches have been very patient with me and the guys are supportive, so it’s been a good start.”

The 6-5, 318-pounder appeared in six games in 2012, registering three tackles and one pass defensed.  He missed the entire 2013 campaign after being placed on the Reserve/Injured list in mid-June.  Now healthy in America’s Finest City, Worthington believes he can make an impact in Defensive Coordinator John Pagano’s system.

“It’s a great scheme they run here,” he said.  “It’s a 3-4 hybrid.  The way they play is totally different than what I’m used to, but it allows you to be an athlete.  It allows you to get upfield and make a lot of plays, so it’s exciting.  I’m getting used to it, but the coaches and everyone around me has been very helpful.”

Worthington takes the place of Damik Scafe, who was waived-injured with a hip ailment.
