Mike McCoy Rewards Team for Strong Offseason

Posted Jun 18, 2014

Head Coach Mike McCoy rewarded his team for an outstanding offseason by cutting minicamp short.

If you were driving by Chargers Park Wednesday afternoon, you most likely heard a deafening roar reverberate throughout Murphy Canyon.  Following practice, Head Coach Mike McCoy announced he was cutting minicamp short, ending the entire offseason program a day and a half early as a reward for two exceptional months of hard work.

“We finished OTAs today,” McCoy said.  “We are not going to have a practice tomorrow, so this was our last OTA practice. I think the players have done an outstanding job this offseason and worked extremely hard.  They’ve done a great job and have done everything we’ve asked of them.  So this was a little bit of appreciation for what they did. I think we’re at a good point right now.  We’ve got a long ways to go, but this is the best thing for the football team moving forward.”

McCoy has an excellent pulse of the locker room, and this gesture was another in a long litany of ways the head coach rewards his team.  That’s partly why each and every Charger has a great deal of respect for him.

“I don’t think you ever expect something like that, but you certainly appreciate it,” said Philip Rivers.  “I think we’ve had a successful offseason for the most part.  We’ve been able to get out of here pretty healthy.  We haven’t had any major things pop up in the offseason.  We’ve gotten a lot done, and as players we appreciate our coach recognizing that.  They’re throwing us a bone, and five weeks from today we’ll be back ready to go.”

The Bolts spent the hours following practice saying goodbye and wishing each other well.  They’ll now head off to rest and recuperate over the next five weeks, while maintaining a workout regimen to stay in shape come the start of training camp.  The team will hold 10 open training camp dates beginning July 24 and look forward to seeing the fans line the fields at Chargers Park.

Now, you can stay in touch with the team anytime, anywhere, on your mobile device with the official app of the San Diego Chargers.
