Mike McCoy Gives Coaches "All the Credit in the World"

Posted Jun 11, 2013

Head coach Mike McCoy praised his coaching staff for laying the foundation during the offseason.

Head Coach Mike McCoy fielded a number of questions following the first practice of this week’s mini camp.

One theme ran rampant through each one of his answers - McCoy couldn’t be prouder of the work his coaching staff has accomplished throughout the entire offseason.

“Give all the coaches all the credit in the world for what they’ve done in the short amount of time we’ve been together as a staff,” he said. “We’re very fortunate to have the coaches here, and the players have bought in.  They’re on board with what we’re doing.  I think they really like what the coordinators are doing, and they're practicing their tails off every day. I can’t ask anything else from the players.”

Asked about the progression of first round draft pick D.J. Fluker, McCoy was quick to laud the work of offensive line coach Joe D’Alessandris and assistant offensive line coach Andrew Dees.

“(Fluker) works extremely hard in doing everything the way you ask him to do it,” he said. “Joe has done a heck of a job.  He and Andrew have spent a lot of time with him and the rest of the offensive line.”

Posed with the same question about Manti Te’o, McCoy credited linebackers coach Joe Barry for his work with the highly touted prospect.

“(Te’o’s) done a great job of learning the system, number one,” he said. “It’s great experience for him to get the reps that he is and learn our system.  We’ll see what he does best come the opener and we’ll get the best 11 out there on defense.  But he’s doing a nice job.  Joe Barry’s done a great job working with him.”

McCoy continued to praise his coaches and the important role they’ve played this offseason, emphasizing the process to lay the foundation for training camp next month.  Once that begins, everything speeds up and becomes even more urgent.  Thus, it’s been critical to lay a strong groundwork this offseason, and the staff has done just that.

“We talked about it in the team meeting this morning about just continuing to learn the system and pay attention to details,” McCoy said. “We have a couple days left here for the coaches to get their point across to the entire football team of how we want to do things here, the changes we’re making, how we’re going to coach certain situations  and just do all the little things right.  We’ll figure out this is the way it’s going to be come training camp. The tempo is going to pick up, it’s going to get a little hotter obviously, and we’ve got to learn what we’re going to do first. The coaches have done a great job of teaching our players what we want done around here every day.”
