McCoy's Offseason Goals, Training Camp Expectations

Posted Jun 17, 2014

Head Coach Mike McCoy discusses his offseason objectives and training camp expectations.

No matter the situation, Head Coach Mike McCoy is a man who always has a plan, which was the case this offseason.  McCoy had a number of goals he wished to accomplish with one overarching motivation from the moment the team began offseason workouts in April, which was the team can’t be satisfied with 2013 because it wasn’t good enough.

“We had to get our new guys up to speed,” he said.  “We wanted to let them understand how we are going to do things here and understand our system.  It was also important to learn the way we’ll meet every day and how our practices are run so they could put themselves in a position when training camp gets here to win a spot on the roster. The other thing is for the guys who have been here the past year to pick up where we left off, improve and understand what we accomplished last year is not good enough.”

The burning desire to reach the next level will continue to motivate the Bolts throughout the 2014 season. For now, the players will separate before returning for the start of the season.  Still, while McCoy expects each player to continue to train, he also stressed rest and relaxation because once training camp begins the team will go full throttle.

“Number one, I told them to enjoy it because when they get back it is going to be a grind,” he said.  “The other big thing is to represent the Spanos family and the Chargers organization in everything they do.  So they’ll be smart.”

McCoy also expanded on how training camp will differ from the recent practices held at the facility.

“Practices are going to be a little bit longer,” he said. “The outline is pretty much the same in that there are similar drills. But we’ll be in pads, so it’s the next step.  There will also be a few more reps here or there and a few more periods.”

The Bolts will have 10 training camp dates open to the public beginning July 24.  McCoy explained how the atmosphere the fans create at Chargers Park has a tangible impact on his team.

“It’s a great opportunity for the fans to get up close and personal,” he said.  “They get a lot closer than they do on game day.  It’s great to see them out there and it’s great for us too because it livens everybody up when the fans are out there.  That’s why we added some music to the last couple practices this week because practices are better when you can liven them up.  But it’s also a great opportunity for us to thank our fans.  We’ll sign autographs afterwards as certain players will go out each day after practice.  So it will be a good opportunity for everybody.”
