McCoy from Combine: "It's the Next Step"

Posted Feb 20, 2014

Head Coach Mike McCoy checks in from the NFL Scouting Combine.

With the 2014 NFL Scouting Combine kicking off on Thursday, Head Coach Mike McCoy gives a coach's perspective on the event and provides updates on what has been a busy offseason for the Bolts coaching staff.

Chargers.com: How has the offseason gone so far in San Diego?

McCoy: It's been great. It's been great to hang out with the family a little bit, go see my daughter's competitions, see my son's basketball games and everything. So it's great to be Dad at home all the time. We're off to a good offseason start with the staff, evaluating our football team and where we're at right now.

Chargers.com: Speaking of the staff, you have some new coaches, you've promoted some coaches… how is the staff coming together?

McCoy: We had some great additions to the staff. (Former Offensive Coordinator) Ken Whisenhunt did a great job for us and he had a great opportunity to move on to Tennessee, but (Offensive Coordinator) Frank Reich will do a great job stepping up for him. (Former Tight Ends Coach) Jason Michael went with Ken and we brought in (Tight Ends Coach) Pete Metzelaars who has worked with some of the coaches on our staff already. (Assistant Linebackers Coach) Bobby (King) came in from Houston which will be a great addition. Moving Nick (Sirianni) to the position he's at now as the Quarterbacks Coach, we're really looking forward to the opportunity these guys have.

Chargers.com: Talking about the Combine, is there one thing you really love when you come out here to Indianapolis?

McCoy: It's great to come out, and it's just part of the evaluation process. You are really taking the next step and looking at players, talking to them in the individual meetings for 15 minutes at night, or the coaches over in the train station sitting down to get to know the players -- it's just part of the process.

Chargers.com: From a coaching perspective, what do you and the position coaches get out of coming here?

McCoy: It's really just getting to know the person better. It's the next step in the process. You've watched some film at this point, not on everybody but on some of the guys, and really just get to know him as a person and not just as a player.

Chargers.com: What are the 15-minute interviews like with the prospects?

McCoy: Everyone is different. There are certain questions you want to get answered before you leave with each player. In those 60 interviews, you have a couple questions initially. The personnel guys will ask questions, then the coaches get into some further details about what they want to know about position specifics.

Chargers.com: How much does the Combine impact who you end up putting on your big board?

McCoy: It's all part of the process. You set the board at a certain stage in the offseason. You review it as you go along. We went over it again last week to see exactly where everybody was. This is the next step in the process.

Chargers.com: Free agency period (March 11) comes before the NFL Draft. Where do you currently stand in regards to that?

McCoy: We've watched the guys we need to watch. Now, it's the wait-and-see game. Wait until the first day of the league year and see what happens.
