McCoy: D.J. Fluker was the Leader Out There

Posted May 10, 2013

First Round draft choice D.J. Fluker made a strong first impression on day one of the San Diego Chargers rookie minicamp.

Head Coach Mike McCoy was asked to name a player who caught his eye on the first day of the team’s rookie minicamp.

Without hesitation, he named the team’s first round draft choice.

D.J. Fluker did a heck of a job,” he said. “When you see kids that come from Alabama, the way they’ve been coached, he really was the leader out there on offense today.  It’s great to see that because we need more guys like that.  Very vocal.  Very positive to everybody.   (He) broke the team down at the end, and I didn’t ask him to.  I wanted to see who would step up, and he stepped up without hesitation.”

While McCoy as well as some of his teammates commended him for taking that leadership role, Fluker brushed it off.  It was a natural position for him to take.

“Being able to lead the team is one of my passions,” he said, still sweaty from an intense workout as his massive frame dwarfed the podium. “I have to be able to earn that role on the field. That’s the main thing. Today was just trying to earn that role and give everything I have.”

With Offensive Line Coach Joe D’Alessandris leading the charge, it’s easy for Fluker to “give everything he had.”  That is an attitude that’s been instilled into each and every member of the unit.   they have all raved about “Coach D” and his style of coaching.

“Working with Coach D, (he’s) one of the guys that wants you to give great effort,” said Fluker. “(He) wants you to be coachable. Being able to get better. Not wanting to tell you twice, he wants you to get it the first time. That’s what he tries to bring to the table for us as offensive linemen—to get better. And having that guy makes you work harder.”

Overall, Fluker is pleased with his performance on the field, but knows this is only the beginning for a player who demands a lot out of himself.

So what lessons did he learn from his first day as a Charger?

“Being able to learn quickly (is important),” he said. “Being able to adapt to your environment. Being able to pick up schemes more quickly over time. It’s a lot to learn in one day. Similar offense. Same terminology, just different calls…It’s a little faster tempo, probably more than what I am used to. But I enjoyed it. (I) had a great practice. Gave good effort, and that’s the main thing.”
