McCoy Answers Fan Questions on Combine, Coaching and Chargers

Posted Feb 26, 2013

San Diego Chargers Head Coach Mike McCoy answers questions submitted by you, the fans.

All week long you have been submitting questions for Head Coach Mike McCoy.  The turnout was tremendous as we received hundreds of submissions.

Here is what McCoy had to say about a wide range of topics including the Combine, his coaching philosophies and the current Chargers roster.

Question: What would you say is your mission statement as a coach? – Steve Trimmins

McCoy: Good question, Steve.  Tom and I want to build a football team and an organization that is going to win year in and year out moving forward.  It’s that simple.

Question: What are you looking for when interviewing the draft prospects at the Combine? - Bernard Keovoravongsa

McCoy: There’s no one set thing I could say. Every person is different, really.  There are going to be certain questions that will be the same for each player and then there are certain things we have outlined for each individual that we want clarified. We use the time to gather as much information as possible and learn as much about them as we can.

Question: How do you evaluate what a player is best at and how they will fit into your specific style of play? – Aaron Evans

McCoy:  Well, what we’ll have here are system definitions for each position.  We know what we’re looking for at each position, and each coach and coordinator is working to define what that will be.  We then tell our scouts what it is we’re looking for at the position and they go out and find the best people to fit in our schemes.  The scouts will then have write ups on each player that tell us about them and what type of player they are in games and in practice. Every player is different, but we try to find their strengths and weaknesses.  Part of my job as a coach that I find important is to turn their weaknesses into a strength through coaching.

Question: Coach McCoy, do you have an idea of what you have to work with and what needs to be upgraded or changed per your philosophy?

McCoy: We have a good idea.  As an entire staff, we’ve evaluated the football team and determined our needs going forward. That’s part of what makes the Combine an important event.  In terms of changing philosophies, one thing that won’t change is we’re always going to find what a player does best and use that to his advantage by putting him in a position to succeed.

Question: Which young Chargers player are you looking forward to developing? – Darrel Short

McCoy: I’m not going to name a single player, but there is a core on offense and defense of some good young players. Right now there are probably more on the defensive side of the ball.  Obviously the front seven has done a great job the past couple years.  The Chargers have done a nice job of drafting some good young players there.  And then on offense there are a bunch of guys that we will build around and add to. Overall I’m just really excited to get to work with them.

Question: My question to you is how do you see Ryan Mathews being utilized this year? – Jason Gallegos

McCoy:  Well, we’re going to build our system number one for our entire offense and then go from there.  We will figure out what Ryan does best.  We have an opinion on that, and (Running Backs Coach) Ollie (Wilson) has an opinion on that.  He knows him well having coached him the past couple years.  He knows him better than anybody, so we’re going to lean on him to see the best ways to utilize Ryan.  But for the offense overall, (Offensive Coordinator) Ken (Whisenhunt) and I have a very strong opinion on what we want to do moving forward, and we’ll do whatever is best for the football team.

Question:  Love reading about the coaching staff you put together.  Couldn’t be more excited!  What was the most exciting part for you in assembling this ace staff? – Georgie Kabuddah

McCoy: Well, the first thing we looked at was we were determined to go out there and find good coaches, good teachers and good people.  And looking across the board, those are the traits each of these guys have.  I was very fortunate to get input from the guys who I already hired and let them have a say on who was being hired.  They had some ideas they threw out there about what they wanted in a staff.  So I’m excited.  It’s a great group to start with.

Question: We all know Philip Rivers has what it takes to be an “elite” quarterback.  Do you have a plan in place to get him back to being one? – Jerome Washington

McCoy:  Without a doubt.  Philip is a great quarterback and I’m looking forward to working with him. We have a plan moving forward, and it will be built and developed over time. We’re building our system over the next couple months and Philip is a big part of what we’re going to be doing.   I’m looking forward to the offseason workouts and building that relationship with him.
