Mathews rushed 21 times for 98 yards and two touchdowns Sunday in a 20-17 win against the defending AFC West champion Kansas City Chiefs. The second-year running back added four catches for 51 yards.
“Last year everything was going 100 miles per hour. I was trying to think and play at the same time (and) it really wasn’t helping me,” Mathews said after Sunday’s game. “This year is a total turnaround. I’m able to focus, just play football and use my talent.”
Now Mathews has earned some national recognition with a nomination for FedEx Ground Player of the Week. Fans can vote at www.NFL.com/FedEx. Mathews is competing with Dallas running back Felix Jones (155 total yards) and Oakland running back Darren McFadden (171 rushing yards, two TDs).
