Mathews nominated for FedEx award

Posted Sep 27, 2011

Chargers running back Ryan Mathews is one of three players competing to win the FedEx Ground Player of the Week award, which is determined by a fan vote, for his performance against the Chiefs.

SAN DIEGO – Ryan Mathews has produced more than 100 yards of total offense in each of his last four regular-season games, dating to his breakout performance against Denver in Week 17 of last season.

Mathews rushed 21 times for 98 yards and two touchdowns Sunday in a 20-17 win against the defending AFC West champion Kansas City Chiefs. The second-year running back added four catches for 51 yards.

“Last year everything was going 100 miles per hour. I was trying to think and play at the same time (and) it really wasn’t helping me,” Mathews said after Sunday’s game. “This year is a total turnaround. I’m able to focus, just play football and use my talent.”

Now Mathews has earned some national recognition with a nomination for FedEx Ground Player of the Week. Fans can vote at www.NFL.com/FedEx. Mathews is competing with Dallas running back Felix Jones (155 total yards) and Oakland running back Darren McFadden (171 rushing yards, two TDs).
