Josh Berry, 17, had his own locker for the final day of minicamp. Inside was all of the equipment needed to play, including a Ryan Mathews’ jersey. Two years ago Josh was diagnosed with acute promyelocytic leukemia.

Josh is now in remission after a year of chemotherapy and blood platelet transfusions. He still takes a pill form of chemotherapy, but is healthy enough to play running back for Long County High School in Ludowici, Ga.

“As soon as I got done with treatment, I got back into the things I use to do,” Josh said.

The Make-A-Wish Foundation granted him a wish. Josh wanted to meet Mathews. “I watched his games on TV a lot,” Josh explained. “I like the way he runs the ball. He has strong legs and keeps his legs moving. When they gave me a chance to get a wish that was my wish.”

Mathews was humbled by Josh’s wish of wanting to spend time with him. “This is awesome,” Mathews said. “He has been watching me since college. It’s cool to have a youngster like him looking up to me. When I was his age, I was looking up to L.T. I didn’t get a chance to meet him until now.”

Mathews spent quality time with Josh on the field after practice and then took him on a tour of Chargers Park. The first stop was the locker room where Mathews gave Josh a pair of his gloves.

Mathews signed a ball for Josh and hunted down his teammates to get their signatures, all of whom were happy to meet Josh and sign the ball including Philip Rivers, Antonio Gates, and Louis Vasquez.

“It’s a great feeling,” Josh said of the experience. “This is something I have never had before.”
