Manti Te'o Addresses His Foot Sprain

Posted Aug 12, 2013

Linebacker Manti Te'o met with the media following Monday's practice to discuss his foot sprain.

Head coach Mike McCoy announced on Saturday that Manti Te'o would miss this week with a foot sprain.

On Monday, we heard from the inside linebacker himself.

“It feels better,” he said.  “It’s getting better… (It happened) during the game.  I just stepped a little wrong…When you’re in the middle of the game you don’t really think about what’s going on.”

Te’o said he doesn’t remember on which play he sustained the injury, but said that he “just felt something” after the game that forced him to get it checked.  It wasn’t until later the following day that he was diagnosed with a foot sprain.

“It was just a weird feeling,” he said. “I just went to go get it checked, and they said just rest… They’ll let me know when I’m ready.”

As for how he performed on the field, Te’o said he was fine, but he knows he has a lot of room left to improve.

“I did alright,” he said.  “I didn’t do as well as I wanted to, but I think did alright.  It was my first time out there and it was ok… No matter where the ball is you always want to get to it so that’s something that I’m going to continue to work on. It’s good to get the first game jitters out.   Now I can relax and realize that it’s just football.  I think as rookies when you first get out there, no matter how hard you try to relax, it’s something you work your whole life (for,).  To not be nervous, it’s kind of impossible.”

Just because he needs to physically rest, that doesn’t mean the rookie is taking it easy.

“Even though I’m physically not doing anything, I’m getting my mental reps,” Te’o said. “(I’m) standing behind the end zone behind the defense and getting my keys, going through what I’d be going through if I was in practice so that I don’t lose a step.  So that’s what I’m focusing on right now.”

Still, the second-round pick admits it is frustrating to not be on the field, especially on Thursday when he returns to the Midwest to play the Chicago Bears.

“Anytime I don’t get to play it’s very disappointing,” Te’o said. “Especially playing in Chicago, I have a lot of people there with Notre Dame being right there.  So it’s definitely something I was looking forward to but thankfully, coach McCoy is allowing me to go so I’ll still be there.  I just won’t be able to play.”
