Malcom Floyd: "I'm Happy to Be a Part Of This Group"

Posted Jul 26, 2014

The wide receiver looked like his old self back in pads.

For the first time this camp, the Chargers put on their pads for Saturday’s morning practice.  Wide receiver Malcom Floyd didn’t miss a beat getting in his uniform considering he hadn’t been in pads since week two of the 2013 season.

“Just going in and being confident,” Floyd said. “There wasn’t really a turnover in the pads.  I just went in and treated it like it was an everyday thing.  It was good just to get out here with the guys with the pads and felt like it was nothing.”

At 6-5, 225-pounds, Floyd has spent the past couple days opposite new cornerback Brandon Flowers, and the receiver believes the healthy competition has been beneficial for both.

“We have been battling here and there.  He had his day today and I kind of had my day yesterday but it’s just good for us just to stay healthy to keep getting each other better.”

After being medically cleared in May, Floyd eagerly awaited his return to the field.  The nine-season veteran hasn’t changed much of his offseason routine, but believes keeping his body in shape to play at a high level is important.  He chooses to stay active on a daily basis and seeks advice from fellow teammates and friends Antonio Gates and Philip Rivers.  Floyd mentioned massages and daily Epsom salt baths are two new regimens he’s added to his routine.

“When you’re away from football, just take care of your body, you can only do so much.  This is a contact sport, you know what you’re in for and all you can do is just be smart and conscious of what’s going on around you.”

One of the keys setting 2014 apart from 2013 is the depth on the Chargers roster.  Floyd has been impressed with Keenan Allen’s vertical game so far this offseason, and a few other members of the receiving corps have caught his eye as well.

“Dontrelle (Inman) really stepped up, he’s really fast vertically.  VB (Vincent Brown) has had a great spring and training camp.  There are a lot of young guys who made plays.  It’s still early in training camp and I know coaches are still critiquing and there’s still a long ways to go before the regular season.”

Despite that long way to go, Floyd recognizes the talent is aplenty and cherishes his time being back as a member of the Chargers.

“We’ve got a lot of weapons, we’ve got a lot of depth and I’m really just happy to be a part of this group.”
