Mailbag: Who Has the Brightest Future?

Posted Dec 14, 2012

Q: Good win. It was awesome. But I'm frustrated. Where's that been all season? – Arjay Rhodes

A: You’re not alone in that thinking, Arjay. Amid all the positive feelings in the locker room following the win in Pittsburgh, many of the players also said they were frustrated that they weren’t able to net the same result in previous games.  In fact, Philip Rivers said it was “sickening” to think back on all the missed opportunities in prior games.

Q: Bro, loved your article about players we've signed off the street having big impacts. Danario Alexander is my favorite player now. Why do you think we've had success with these kinds of guys? – Jason Brown

A: Thanks for the kind words, Jason.  I think there are two main reasons why the team has had success with these types of players.  The first is due to the coaches, who have done a tremendous job getting these players ready in such a condensed time period.  The other reason is that the players themselves, including Alexander, Bront Bird and Reggie Wells, have worked tirelessly since getting here to prepare and execute the game plan to the best of their abilities.

Q: When will Eddie Royal be ready to play again? – Kenny Chancey

A: Eddie is getting closer to returning to game action, but don’t expect to see him this week against the Panthers.  He did return to practice on a limited basis, but Turner said he doesn’t expect him to suit up this weekend.

Q: What position do you think is the team’s strength going forward? – Cole Behar

A: In my opinion, the position group that has the brightest future for the Bolts is the defensive line with such bright young players already making an impact.  Leading the way is Corey Liuget, a borderline Pro Bowler this year in just his second season.  So far in 2012 he has 38 tackles, five sacks, nine passes defensed, one fumble recovery and one forced fumble.  Also coming on strong  are second-round pick Kendall Reyes, who has 17 tackles and two sacks, and third-year defensive tackle Cam Thomas, who is coming off one of his best games as a pro against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Q: I've noticed (who can help it) that Eric Weddle is growing his beard out. Is it because of a football superstition or is he going to be playing Santa this year? – Teri Peterson

A: It definitely is an impressive beard!  Eric was actually asked about it last week.  He said it started out as a “movember” type of facial hair, but then he decided to keep it going.  Has nothing to do with superstitions, as it’s been about five weeks now.  No clue if he plans on playing Santa this year, but maybe I’ll have to ask him and get back to you on that!

Q: Last week you nailed the bold prediction with the defense forcing a fumble and recovering it for a touchdown. What’s this week’s bold prediction? – Jose Gentil

A: Yeah, I was quite proud to get that one right! This week I’m going to say the Chargers get not one but two rushing touchdowns.  The team hasn’t had one since Week 5 in New Orleans, and I think they will break out in a big way.
