Mailbag: Who Are the Diamonds in the Rough?

Posted Dec 7, 2012

Q: For my question I really tried to think of one out of the box that has been in my head for a few weeks now. Do you think Danario Alexander will stay healthy and continue to give Philip Rivers a weapon down field and on screens? I'm thrilled that in the midst of our losses Alexander has put up big numbers. Will he be a long term weapon or short term fling? – Zachary Guzman

A: Good question Zachary.  I talked to Danario a couple weeks ago and he told me that he wants to stay with the Chargers. He appreciates the opportunity the team gave him and enjoys the chemistry he has with Rivers.  Of course, things can change drastically, but it’s certainly an encouraging sign that he wants to remain with the team. Your question regarding his health is a bit trickier to answer.  You can’t glaze over his past issues dealing with knee and leg injuries, but he’s showing us just how dangerous he can be when healthy.

Q: With Eddie Royal looking like he'll miss another game and Seyi Ajirotutu out for the year, who will be our slot receiver? Robert Meachem? – Catherine Horton

A: I’m not quite sure Meachem’s skill set makes him a candidate to play the slot position.  I’d keep my eye on Micheal Spurlock.  He played there earlier in the season before he was waived, and excelled in the slot during the preseason when he led the team in receptions with 10 catches for 135 yards.

Q: Who do you think the Chargers will draft in the first round of the 2013 Draft? – Jacob Tyra

A: I’ve been getting a lot of questions into the mailbag regarding the draft, and as fun and exciting as it is to think about,  it’s really too early to start speculating on it.  The draft is not for another four months, and there are a lot of variables to consider before making any predictions.  We still don’t know who will be drafting in which slot, which underclassmen will be declaring or how free agency will pan out.  All those factors play a big role in determining who will be drafted.

Q: I'm flying to San Diego to finally see my first Chargers game next week. What should I check out at Qualcomm? Thanks, and go Chargers!  -Bobby Caldrone

A: Looking forward to having you here Bobby.  Hopefully we can get a win for your first game.  There’s a lot to see and do at Chargers games.  Here’s a link to what’s going on at Qualcomm Stadium.

Q: Now that the season is almost at the end why not try some of the young talent on the team and find those diamonds in the rough? Give them a chance to show what they have to offer. – Ray Gagnon

A: I think one of the bright spots this season, particularly the last few weeks, has been the play of the youngsters.  The likes of Danario Alexander, Corey Liuget, Marcus Gilchrist, Shareece Wright, Melvin Ingram, Kendall Reyes, Mike Harris and a number of others have shown they have what it takes to be big-time players in the NFL for years to come.

Q: I like your bold predictions. I always root for them to come through. What are you choosing this week? – Tommy Sheftfield

A: Thanks Tommy, appreciate that.  The defense has been focused all week on getting as much pressure on the quarterback as possible.  So this week I’m going to have faith in their preparation and say the defense will have a strip-sack returned for a touchdown.
