Mailbag: What Was Best Moment of the Year?

Posted Dec 28, 2012

Q: No Pro Bowlers this year? I believe we had several snubs, what about you? Thanks – Bobby Caldrone

A: Having a losing record doesn’t do any of the players any favors, but I do believe there are a few Chargers who deserved to be named to the Pro Bowl.  The three that come to mind are Eric Weddle, Corey Liuget and Mike Scifres.  As Norv Turner pointed out, Weddle is having as good a year as last year when he started for the AFC.  Liuget has made tremendous strides over the last 3/4s of the season and in my book, has been as disruptive as any defensive lineman out there.  And what else is there to say about Mike Scifres except that he is hands down one of the best punters in the game.  I’m in awe of his combination of power and accuracy.

Q: Do the players hate the Raiders as much as we the fans do? – Jack Deprade

A: Hates a pretty strong word.  But 100%, the guys on the team want to beat the Raiders badly.  They understand the magnitude of the rivalry and want to win not only for themselves, but for the fans like you who are quite passionate about every  game between the two teams.

Q: I saw the team announced their awards this morning.  How seriously do the players who win take the awards? – Kim Knight

A: The team takes the awards very seriously, Kim.  Last week when they were voting, the players put a lot of thought and careful consideration into who they were selecting.  As a result, the players who won were extremely honored to be recognized by their teammates.  They spend months in tight quarters with each otherso to be recognized by their peers is a very special honor for them.

Q: What was your favorite game this season? –Jon Gallagher

A: Good question Jon.  Personally, I really loved the Steelers game. The team was struggling, had never won a regular season game in Pittsburgh and came into the game banged up, especially on the offensive line.  The Chargers could easily have gone into that game with a negative outlook and folded, but instead routed the Steelers for an emotional win.  After the game the team was incredibly upbeat and emotional.  It was quite a scene and one I will remember for years to come.

Q: My bold prediction is Danario Alexander has at least 90 receiving yards and 1 TD. What do you think? – Jacob Tyra

A: I wouldn’t call that “bold” based on what Alexander has done this season, but I like the way you’re thinking!  I think he gets that too.  My  bold prediction for the week is that the Chargers have not one, but two rushing touchdowns in a rout.
