Mailbag: What Does a Playoff Berth Mean to Bolts?

Posted Jan 1, 2014

Check out this week's edition of Ricky Henne's Fan Mailbag.

Q: What does being in the playoffs mean to the Chargers? – Brian Spaccalota

A: It means the world to them.  This is what they work so hard for. In the offseason, in OTAs, in training camp, through the grueling regular season and so on, it’s a major grind all for one goal – to win a Super Bowl.  Making the playoffs gives you a chance to go on a special run and do just that.  Personally, hearing the players say they want to do more than just make the postseason has me fired up.  Only six teams per conference are in the position the Bolts are in, and they have their sights set on making it a journey to remember to capture the Lombardi Trophy.

Q: Being a huge Chargers fan, I am extremely delighted of the playoffs BUT even more concerned about the weather! The temperature clearly gives the Bengals an advantage. Please tell me a California football team can properly prepare for this. -  Russ Martin

A: It doesn’t matter where or when the game is, the Chargers just want to play football.  As of Wednesday, the weather forecast is supposed to be in the 30’s with a mix of rain and snow.  But no matter how cold it is or what kind of wintry mix falls, the conditions are the same for both teams. The Bolts won’t use the weather as an excuse .. The two coldest games of the season for the Chargers also happened to be two of their best victories at Kansas City and in Denver.

Q: You said it on BoltsCast Ricky! You said that the first time we played the Bengals was your least favorite game of the year, and mine too. We played like garbage I thought. What can the Chargers do differently this time around to get the W?– Randall Q.

A: I thought the last time we played the Bengals was not indicative of Chargers football. The team turned the football over three times that game and they entered the match having committed three turnovers in their last three games combined.   As a result, Philip Rivers and company scored a season-low 10 points.  On the other side of the ball, the defense couldn’t stop the run at all while as of late, the team has been very stout against the rush.  As long as the Chargers play their brand of football, I like our chances.  Here is what Rivers said following the loss to the Bengals the first time they met:

“We turned the ball over three times. We have to take care of the ball first and find a way to score touchdowns. Ten points is not going to win you many games.

Q: What did you think of Eric Weddle's fake punt? – Sara Eccelstein

A: One of the gutsiest calls I’ve ever seen.  The coaching staff gives Weddle the option of audibling into that fake punt given the opposition’s look.  When you decide to do that, you better be right.  And as all the players and coaches said, great players make great plays , and Weddle certainly did on that one.    Although my heart was in my throat as it all played out!
