Mailbag: What Are the Biggest Position Battles?

Posted Jul 10, 2014

The answers to your burning questions about the Bolts.

Q: Ricky, what position battle(s) are you most anxious to follow in training camp? – Dan O’Brien

A: The Chargers are very pleased with the depth they have across the board, so I think the competition should be tremendous.  Still, of all the positions, I am eager to see how outside linebacker shakes out.  The Bolts have a great mix of vets and young players poised to make a big impact in 2014, so I want to see how creative Defensive Coordinator John Pagano and Linebackers Coach Joe Barry are in deploying them.  Overall, there are nine outside linebackers on the roster in Dwight Freeney, Jarret Johnson, Melvin Ingram, Jerry Attaochu, Larry English, Thomas Keiser, Tourek Williams, Cordarro Law and Colton UnderwoodReggie Walker also saw time at the position a year ago as well.  Training camp should give us a better idea of how it all shakes out.  Make sure you check out the open dates and come out to Chargers Park to see the competition for yourself.

Q:
How will Marion Grice fit into our three-headed (or four) monster running back committee? – Kaleb Cruzado

A: A lot of you have been interested in Grice, and that is totally understandable based on the sixth-round pick’s career at Arizona State.  The kid is extremely versatile, averaging 176.5 all-purpose yards per game, ranking third in the nation.  He also had a nose for the end zone, tallying 39 TDs in his 24-game ASU career.  Still, the Chargers have great depth at the running back position with Ryan Mathews, Danny Woodhead and Donald Brown.  That “three-headed monster” as you call it, is the same exact phrase Brown used when he signed here.  I think preseason will be telling to see how much playing time Grice gets in 2014.  No knock against him, but with the deep talent ahead of him on the depth chart, it may take a very special camp performance to earn him playing time in the deep backfield.

Q: I really, really like the "All You Need to Know" series. Which bio was your favorite to read? – Chance Sivalames

A:  Our PR staff does a great job putting the player bios together for our media guide. You can’t help but get pumped for the season reading about guys like Eric Weddle, Antonio Gates, Malcom Floyd and so on.  That being said, have you read the post about Philip Rivers? What our quarterback has accomplished over his career on and off the field is extremely impressive, so that was my favorite.
