Mailbag: Pass Rush, Wes Welker & Rubber Match

Posted Jan 8, 2014

Check out this week's edition of Ricky Henne's Fan Mailbag.

Q: Ding ding ding it's time for round three. For all the marbles. The rubber match. Do or die. Let's do this! What does the team think about playing the Broncos for the third time?– Wesley Vega

A: It’s not often that teams meet three times in a season, but it’s awfully exciting when they do because that means playoffs are at stake!  These two teams know each other as well as anybody in the league, so it should be a great contest.  Personally, I think this is the first time Philip Rivers has faced a team for a third time in a season, so I’m eager to see the impact that has on the quarterback.  Here is what he had to say about it:

“You have two games on tape. You have 16 games in a season, two that you’ve played them. You can over think some things. They did this and this, so let’s do this and that, and we can get this. You can almost outthink yourself or out plan. As a quarterback, I can out think myself and you out think what they might do or did there, what they did on this situation or that. So I think it’s important just to plan like you always have, prepare like you always have, study the same, and be prepared for something new.”

Q: What do you think about the pass rush our defense has been putting on the QB? -  Austin Blake

A: In my personal view, I think it was the biggest key to getting the win over the Bengals.  Pressure on Andy Dalton led directly to Shareece Wright’s interception, led to him getting the ball out quick when Melvin Ingram picked him off and forced him to scramble when he ended up coughing up the football to Jahleel Addae.  The defense, particularly Corey Liuget, did an excellent job getting to Peyton Manning in the Chargers victory over the Broncos last month, so it will be crucial to keep that kind of pressure up!

Q: How will Wes Welker's return impact this week's game? – Joseph Cesare

A: He’s definitely a weapon, and a dangerous one at that, who the Bolts didn’t see the last time they played each other.  So let’s look back at Welker’s stats from the Week 10 game he played in San Diego.  The wideout caught just three balls for 21 yards, so the Chargers had a great plan in place the first time around.  They must do a similar job on the star slot receiver this time around to improve their chances of advancing to the AFC Championship Game.
