SAN DIEGO – The Chargers and
MADD recognized the team and Jammer during its Law Enforcement Recognition program at the Town & Country Resort.
The Chargers welcomed MADD as partners in the team’s game day designated driver program, and volunteers from the organization reached out to tailgaters at Qualcomm Stadium and encouraged participation.
Along with increased visibility on Facebook and a nice incentives package for those who pledged, MADD helped the Chargers achieve a one-year increase in the number of designated driver pledges of more than 12 percent during the 2011 season. More than 11,500 pledged as designated drivers during San Diego’s 10 home games.
“Our fans deserve the credit for making our designated-driver program a success,” Chargers Executive Vice President-Chief Executive Officer A.G. Spanos said. “We have great fans in San Diego who help us create a safe, family-friendly experience at our games.”
Senior Manager of Game Operations and Brand Development Kevin Daly and Director of Stadium/Game Operations & Special Events Sean O’Conner accepted a MADD Leadership Award on behalf of the team Wednesday.
Jammer, one table over from the team representatives, was recognized for supporting MADD initiatives through a law enforcement recognition event, a golf classic and raising awareness among San Diego County students during red ribbon week. Jammer is honorary chair of the annual MADD fundraiser, the Designated Driver Golf Classic, set for May 7 at the Maderas Golf Club in Poway.
The Chargers have run one of the most successful designated driver programs in the NFL, finishing top five in the league from 2007-11.
The Bolts also claimed the second-annual Designated Driver Challenge in partnership with TEAM Coalition.
The contest started in 2010, with San Diego defeating rival Denver, and expanded to include the entire AFC West in 2011. Points were awarded for the number of designated drivers pledged at each team’s stadium as well as for “likes” on each team’s designated driver Facebook page.
Centerplate, California Highway Patrol and Anheuser-Busch also got recognition for the Chargers’ Designated Driver Challenge victory.
The designated-driver program is just one component of the fan behavior initiatives the Chargers offer. More than 1,000 employees that operate at Qualcomm Stadium are certified in effective alcohol management training.Each fan is limited to two alcoholic beverages per transaction in the first half and one in the third quarter. There is no alcohol service in the seating area after halftime and the service policy includes ID checks for all fans.
