The Chargers eventually punted, but with the defense playing so well and little time on the clock, the Jets had little chance to make a comeback.
After three sacks on the drive, which gave San Diego 11 sacks on the day, the Chargers got the ball back on the Jets 17-yard line with less than two minutes left in the game.
Rivers kneeled the ball to seal the victory, as the Chargers left New York with a 27-17 win to improve to 6-9 on the season. The Chargers conclude their season next week at home against the Oakland Raiders.

The Chargers defense, which has played well all game, continued to keep quarterback Greg McElroy and the Jets offense off the field, forcing another punt.
Taking over on their own 17-yard line, the Chargers offense seemed to pick up where it left off the last drive. But on third-and-seven near midfield, Rivers was sacked and the Chargers were forced to punt.

The Chargers got the ball back in Jets territory and were able to keep the drive alive when the Jets were called for a defensive hold on third down. The penalty gave the Chargers first-and-10 at the New York 40-yard line.
Later in the drive, Rivers connected with Gates for a 34-yard touchdown to make it 24-14 Chargers. The receiving touchdown was the 82nd of Gates’ career, which is most in team history, passing former wide receiver Lance Alworth. The catch also put Gates over the 500-yard plateau for the ninth consecutive season.
On the next Jets drive, strong safety Corey Lynch intercepted the Greg McElroy pass and returned it 31 yards deep into New York territory.
Second Quarter
On the final play of the first quarter, quarterback Philip Rivers connected with wide receiver Eddie Royal for 12 yards, which was San Diego’s first first-down of the game.
Later in the drive, Rivers hit wide receiver Danario Alexander for a 19-yard gain on fourth-and-two, which put the Chargers on the Jets 16-yard line. Consecutive holding penalties by ![]()

After not being able to make up the yardage, Nick Novak’s 46-yard field goal was negated by Chargers having too many men on the field. Pushed back five yards, Novak nailed the 51-yard attempt to cut the Chargers’ deficit to 14-10. The field goal tied a season-long for Novak and was two yards short of his career-long.

Rivers finally looked to be getting into a rhythm, hitting Royal for a first down. But the drive stalled after Rivers overthrew tight end Antonio Gates on third down. ![]()

Rivers was 5-for-10 for 54 yards passing, while Royal led the Chargers with two receptions for 26 yards. San Diego totaled on 75 yards in the first half.
First Quarter

On their next drive, New York used some trickery to move the ball, completing two 30 yard plays to move the ball into the red zone. After McElroy scrambled to the one-yard line to bring up first-and-goal, running back Shonn Greene punched it in from one yard out to tie the score at seven.
The San Diego offense was unable to get a first down on its first possession, going three-and-out and giving the ball back to the Jets.

The San Diego Chargers (5-9) prepare for their last road game of the season as they travel to East Rutherford, N.J. to take on the New York Jets (6-8) at MetLife Stadium.
The Jets, who are coming off a 14-10 loss to the Tennessee Titans on Sunday, were eliminated from postseason contention. Quarterback Mark Sanchez had five turnovers against the Titans, which led to him being benched for this week’s contest against the Chargers. Second-year quarterback Greg McElroy will get the nod despite only attempting seven passes in his NFL career. The Jets are led by running back Shonn Greene, who has 951 yards rushing and six touchdowns, and wide receiver Jeremy Kerley, who leads the team with 53 receptions and 739 receiving yards.
The Jets are 3-4 at home this season, while the Chargers own a 3-4 away record. New York ranks 28th in the NFL, scoring 18.2 points per game, while San Diego ranks 21st, scoring 21.4 points per game. New York’s strong suit is their pass defense, allowing only 191.1 yards per game, which is second in the league.
