Later in the drive, Rivers connected with Gates for a 34-yard touchdown to make it 24-14 Chargers. The receiving touchdown was the 82nd of Gates’ career, which is most in team history, passing former wide receiver Lance Alworth. The catch also put Gates over the 500-yard plateau for the ninth consecutive season.
On the next Jets drive, strong safety Corey Lynch intercepted the Greg McElroy pass and returned it 31 yards deep into New York territory.

On the final play of the first quarter, quarterback Philip Rivers connected with wide receiver Eddie Royal for 12 yards, which was San Diego’s first first-down of the game.

After not being able to make up the yardage, Nick Novak’s 46-yard field goal was negated by Chargers having too many men on the field. Pushed back five yards, Novak nailed the 51-yard attempt to cut the Chargers’ deficit to 14-10. The field goal tied a season-long for Novak and was two yards short of his career-long.

On their next drive, New York used some trickery to move the ball, completing two 30 yard plays to move the ball into the red zone. After McElroy scrambled to the one-yard line to bring up first-and-goal, running back Shonn Greene punched it in from one yard out to tie the score at seven.
The San Diego offense was unable to get a first down on its first possession, going three-and-out and giving the ball back to the Jets.

The San Diego Chargers (5-9) prepare for their last road game of the season as they travel to East Rutherford, N.J. to take on the New York Jets (6-8) at MetLife Stadium.
The Jets, who are coming off a 14-10 loss to the Tennessee Titans on Sunday, were eliminated from postseason contention.
