Lee Makes Most of Opportunity

Posted Aug 10, 2012

If you didn’t know any better, you would have sworn it was Philip Rivers under center, playing with confidence and throwing the pigskin with both zip and pin-point accuracy.

But instead of number 17 out on the field, the jersey read 16, and it was rookie Jarrett Lee directing the Chargers offense.

The rookie entered the game late in the first quarter and remained the team’s signal caller for the remainder of the game.  He finished with a quarterback rating of 99.6 after completing 15 of 22 passes for 235 yards, one touchdown and an interception.

“It felt great to be out there in this ball game,” he said afterwards in the locker room.  “It was fun.  We scored some touchdowns and had a lot of big plays. It was a great opportunity for me and the coaches did a great job with us young guys getting us in there and giving us some positive plays.  It just felt good.”

The highlight of his performance came on a perfectly executed play-action pass from the Packers 27 yard line.  After faking the hand-off, Lee stepped back into the pocked and delivered a perfect strike to Vincent Brown who danced around defenders before muscling his way into the end zone.  It was one of many passes the two connected on during their time on the field together.

“Vincent is an incredible athlete and is someone you want to get the ball in his hands,” said Lee.  “He is a great route runner and you know he’s going to make big plays for you.  On the touchdown, it was a play-action pass and I turned around, and I caught him in the corner of my eye running a great route.  He got open and I just hit him and we scored.”

One player who came away impressed with his performance was Rivers, who had glowing things to say about the young passer.

“I thought he did well,” he said. “It’s his first game in the NFL and he played three quarters plus, and we won the game.  That’s the objective as the quarterback, to help your team win, and he did that.  He made a great throw on the touchdown and a couple of other great throws on some third down conversions were huge.”

If he continues on the upward trajectory he started Thursday night, Lee could very well have a bright future in the NFL.
