Jason Verrett Makes NFL Debut

Posted Aug 24, 2014

Jason Verrett Makes his NFL debut as a San Diego Charger.

It was a moment everyone who cares about the San Diego Chargers had been waiting for.

The players, coaches, staff and fans alike had eagerly awaited first round draft pick Jason Verrett’s NFL debut.

“Hey Rook, did you even do anything?”  Eric Weddle jokingly heckled him in the locker room after the game. “Did you hit anyone?”

Verrett sheepishly relied “Nah” with a laugh.

“Clean game, that’s good!” Weddle said with a smile.  “But no, it was good to have the young buck out there.  He didn’t get his name called so that’s good.  He’s got to be an important guy for us this year so it was good to get him some run.  It’s going to be beneficial for us.”

Playing solely with the first team defense, Verrett was moved to have realized his lifelong dream of playing in the NFL.  Not only that, his first action came near his hometown so he had over two dozen friends and family in attendance.

“It felt good to be out there and get my feet wet a little bit,” he said.  “I didn’t get too much action but I enjoyed it.  It was fun because I had a lot of my family come down to see me for my first game.”

Verrett also noted how special it was to run around with guys like Weddle and Brandon Flowers.

“It was good to be out there with those guys because I plan on being out there with them for the rest of the year,” he said.  “It was fun to be out there with them, and I’m already looking forward to next week.”

The rookie cornerback also made sure to thank all the Chargers' fans for their support.  He explained how they’ve helped motivate him over the course of the off season.

“It’s all love,” he said.  “They’ve showed the love.  At the end of the day it’s my job to do my work on the field and put on a show for the fans.  We have a lot of great fans in San Diego.  A lot of them traveled to see us here, so it’s a blessing to play for them.  That’s all I’ve got to say.  It’s a blessing.”

Head Coach Mike McCoy had been eager to see Verrett on the field as well.

“We’ll watch the film, evaluate him and see how he did overall,” he said. "It’s tough for me to see everybody out there but some of the coaches had their eye on him and he did a nice job. And it was good for him to get back out there or get out there really for the first time.”
