Inman’s Big Day Proves Practice Makes Perfect

Posted Aug 8, 2014

Former CFL standout paced Chargers with three catches for 107 yards and a TD.

Dontrelle Inman spent the past two seasons tearing up the CFL, posting a pair of 50-catch seasons and establishing himself as an elite receiver north of the border.

He proved equally capable of making an impact in the NFL on Thursday with a number of key catches to spur the Chargers to victory.

Inman finished with three receptions for 107 yards and one touchdown.  His score came on a perfect 70-yard catch-and-run up the right sideline midway through the third quarter that brought Qualcomm Stadium to its feet.

“I told Dontrelle as we broke the huddle just be alert, because I knew what the route could be and it’s a play we ran in practice a bunch of times,” said Kellen Clemens, who delivered the ball.  “He had a great release on the play, and I knew we were post-safety man press coverage. So he had a great release and turned on the jets once he got it.  So it was fun to watch.”

While it may be fun to watch, Inman admitted it’s a bit nerve-wracking when the ball is in the air.

“It’s kind of stressful,” he said.  “First you wait for the ball to come down and then you have to actually run another 50 yards or 40 yards.  It’s a bit stressful.

The play was eerily similar to the ones he’s made all training camp, which is why fellow receivers like Malcom Floyd think highly of number 15.

“I’ve seen him in the spring and in training camp, and he’s been a playmaker the whole time,” Floyd said.  “So it’s not too surprising to see him do it out here on the field.  It definitely helped us and was a big playmaker with all three of his catches.  And he had over 100 yards so it was great to see.”

While everyone was quick to laud Inman, the receiver was equally fast to credit his teammates.

“It’s always good to display a little bit of something.  It’s just not about me.  I’ve never been the type of guy who always took all the credit.  My teammates, I work with Eddie Royal every day, on and off practice, in the meeting rooms and everything.  It’s not about me.  I want to give credit to the coaches for just giving me the opportunity.  One thing we (Eddie Royal) work on is catching the ball over the shoulder so that pass that I caught today was definitely from the work that we put in day in and day out.”
