Inability to Get Off the Field Dooms Bolts

Posted Aug 16, 2014

The 41-14 loss proved costly against the defending Super Bowl Champs.

The Chargers didn’t mince words when they came off the field following their 41-14 defeat to the Seattle Seahawks.

They didn’t care that it was only the preseason.  They were embarrassed by “a good old fashioned butt whooping” and promised to learn from their mistakes the next time they face the defending Super Bowl Champs for when it counts in Week 2.

But of all the negatives to come out of the game, their inability to get off the field on defense may have bothered them the most.  In fact, the Seahawks did not punt all game.   Of their nine possessions, five ended in touchdowns and two with field goals. The only drives in which they didn’t score were the ones at the end of each half when the home team ran out the clock.

“They never punted in the game,” Head Coach Mike McCoy said bluntly.  “It’s hard to have success when the (other) team never punts.  Too many little mistakes against a good football team and that costs you.  So we have a lot of work ahead of us.  We’ll go back, watch the film tomorrow with the team and move on.”

Friday night marked Corey Liuget’s first game action of the preseason, and the defense’s performance ate away at him as he stood in the locker room.

“This wasn’t pretty, it’s not good and not acceptable,” he said.  “The only good thing was that it’s the preseason.  But at the end of the day, everything matters.  So the preseason does matter.  It’s just sad that we didn’t make them punt at all today.  It wasn’t a good overall performance by the defense.”

Jerry Attaochu didn’t shy away from how disappointing the defense played either.  Even though he’s a rookie playing in just his second NFL game, he hammered home that the team will learn from this experience moving forward.

“It’s definitely something we’ll have to improve from because we have no other choice,” he said.  “More than anything, like it was emphasized earlier from some of my teammates, it’s better that it happened now than in the regular season.  It’s the preseason and we can get better from it.  It’s no excuse, but we will learn from this when we play them in the second week of the season.”
