He's Back! Bolts, Butler Reach Agreement

Posted Feb 28, 2014

The San Diego Chargers have reached an agreement with Donald Butler.

Last week in Indianapolis, when General Manager Tom Telesco fielded questions from fans, he was asked what his priority would be in regards to the salary cap.

“Our first priority right now is to try and resign some of our own players,” he said.

True to his word, the Bolts have reached an agreement with one of the brightest young linebackers in the game, Donald Butler.

“We’re excited to have Donald remain a San Diego Charger,” said General Manager Tom Telesco. “We’ve said all along that we’d like to keep as many of our own players as possible and Donald is a great example of that. He’s a big part of what we are building on defense and he’s not only one of the leaders of our defense on the field, but his teammates voted him a team captain last year showing that he’s also a leader inside the locker room.”

Number 56 has been a mainstay in the middle during his career in San Diego after being selected in the third round of the 2010 draft.  Unfortunately, he tore his left Achilles tendon in training camp and missed his entire rookie year. Since then, however, Butler has been a dominant force.  In three seasons he’s recorded 295 tackles with 22 tackles for loss, 5.5 sacks, four forced fumbles and three interceptions.  Butler is also a vocal leader on the field and in the locker room, and at just 25 years old was elected co-captain of the defense in 2013.

This past season, Butler continued to be extremely productive on the field.  According to the coaches’ stats, he recorded the second most tackles on the team with 99 in 13 games.  He also had four tackles for loss, five QB pressures, three passes defensed, one forced fumble, one interception and 0.5 sacks.

Butler also rose to the occasion with a terrific postseason.  In the Wild Card game against the Cincinnati Bengals, he forced a game-changing fumble at the five yard line when it appeared Giovanni Bernard was about to waltz into the end zone.  Then, he kept the Chargers in the game against the Denver Broncos in the Divisional Round with an interception in the end zone at the end of the half.

We will have more information as it becomes available, but Butler himself was eager to let the fans know he was returning to the Chargers.

For now, congratulate Butler in the comments below!
