Hard Work Paying Off for Kwame Geathers

Posted Aug 10, 2014

The defensive tackle has been working to refine his skills this offseason.

A year ago, defensive tackle Kwame Geathers was working hard for a roster spot after signing with the Chargers as an undrafted free agent in May.  Geathers earned that spot and played in seven games for the Bolts, recording four total tackles in limited playing time.

Fast-forward to 2014 and Geathers is still hard at work.  He finished up week three of training camp on Saturday, and with one preseason game under his belt, said the biggest difference between year one and two pertains to comfort.

“It’s a big difference,” Geathers said.  “You’ve still got a lot to learn, but just knowing what you’ve got to go against everyday is a big difference.  Just coming in being more comfortable and being able to come out and move a little bit faster.”

When asked if he still has that undrafted hunger to compete, the 6-6, 335-pound former Georgia Bulldog couldn’t agree more.

“I still have a drive, I think I’ll always have this drive, to come out and compete every day,” he said.  “I’ve got great players I get to compete against every day, and that just makes me better.  I come out every day looking forward to it.”

While the competition is high, Geathers uses his drive and determination to perfect his game.  One of the skills he’s working on this offseason is his stance, and Geathers credits Defensive Line Coach Don Johnson with helping him become the best he can be.

“Coach Johnson’s on me every day.  That’s the main thing.  There’s not one day he doesn’t tell me to keep my pad level low because they know and I know that if my pad level’s high, I’m going to get blocked.  If I’m low, no one can stop me.”

Head Coach Mike McCoy recognizes Geathers hard work, noting the difference in his play when he gets his pad level down.

“He’s worked extremely hard to get in the conditioning level that he’s at right now,” McCoy said.  “Working with Don and everybody up front, (he’s) understanding all the little details of not playing high.  When he stands up, that’s when he’s going to struggle a little bit.  When he keeps his pads down and plays low, he’s tough to block in there.  He’s done a nice job and he’s growing as a football player.”

Gaethers attributes a lot of his growth to Coach Johnson, someone whom he has great respect for.

“Coach Johnson’s a great coach.  Ever since I came in, he told me it’s going to be a grind and that’s he’s going to be on me pushing me.  That’s what I need.  It’s great to have him.”
