Geathers, Jerideau Getting Opportunity to Impress

Posted May 11, 2013

Undrafted free agent defensive tackles Kwame Geathers and Byron Jerideau figure to get a long look from Chargers brass.

Kwame Geathers and Byron Jerideau watched as 254 players were selected in the NFL Draft.

Projected to be one of them, neither of their names got called.

Disappointed, their phones started ringing off the hook as teams clamored to sign the defensive tackles as rookie free agents.  Suddenly their fate was in their hands, but for each player, the decision on which team to join was simple.

The San Diego Chargers.

As Geathers stated, General Manager Tom Telesco and his staff showed “a tremendous amount of love” which made the decision easy.

The two rookie free agents were highlighted by Telesco during a recent conference call with season ticket holders as players he is keeping an eye on.  The duo fits the mold the team is looking for in a defensive tackle.  Plus, the only other player at the position on the roster is veteran Cam Thomas, so Geathers and Jerideau have a good shot at not only making the team but becoming part of the rotation should they impress over the coming months. As if that wasn’t motivation enough, being passed over by 32 NFL teams is another driving force for each man.

“I definitely have a chip on my shoulder,” said Geathers.  “I want to show I’m a hard worker and I’m hungry for this job.  I’m going to go to work.  I’m going to compete for a spot on this roster, and I have a very, very big chip on my shoulder.”

As for Jerideau, the same sentiments are felt.

“I’m ready to get out there and get to work and show that I’m as good as any other lineman in the draft,” he said. “The Chargers reached out to me immediately, and talking to them, I feel like this is the best spot for me.”
