The Chargers’ tight end expects a full recovery from his torn plantar fascia but needs an extended rest to allow it to heal.

SAN DIEGO – Tight end Antonio Gates (foot) will not play in the Pro Bowl because he was not cleared medically.

Gates missed six of the last eight games with a torn plantar fascia in his right foot. He does not need surgery and expects a full recovery, but the injury requires a prolonged period of rest.

The coaches, players and fans selected Gates to his seventh Pro Bowl. He caught 50 passes for a team-best 782 yards and 10 touchdowns despite acute pain stemming from his injury more than half the season.

Quarterback Philip Rivers and guard Kris Dielman are expected to play in the Jan. 30 game in Honolulu, Hawaii. Rivers never has played in a Pro Bowl despite being selected two other times.
