The 2012 season has been an injury –plagued one for the 6-foot-9, 340-pound Gaither. The sixth-year veteran suffered back spasms during the opening days of training camp and was out nearly two months before returning for a Week 4 match against the Chiefs. Altogether, Gaither played in four games on the year.
After practice on Friday, Turner expressed his disappointment that Gaither was unable to contribute much this season.
“We’ve given Jared Gaither every opportunity to be a part of this team, and it just hasn’t worked out,” he said. “Physically he hasn’t been able to. It just is what it is. There’s not a lot left to be said about it.”
The man who appears set to take his roster spot is Haslam, a third year pro out of Rutgers. The 6-foot-5, 310-pound tackle played five games in 2010 for the Jacksonville Jaguars before placed on the Reserve-Injured list. He missed all of 2011 due to a knee injury and was signed as a free agent by the Raiders back in May. The Chargers signed him to the practice squad shortly after Oakland waived him.
