Free Agency Roundup: Day 1

Posted Mar 12, 2013

Here's a recap of all the news regarding the San Diego Chargers from the first day of free agency.

The first day of free agency was a busy one around the NFL, and the San Diego Chargers made a number of calculated moves true to the vision General Manager Tom Telesco mapped out when he was first hired.

The day started out with the team releasing a pair of veterans as they aim to get younger and save salary cap space.  The first player released was 33-year old tight end Randy McMichael, who spent the last three seasons with the Bolts.  Later, the team released 33-year old defensive tackle Antonio Garay after four seasons with the club.

Shortly after free agency began at 1:00pm, the team announced they re-signed kicker Nick Novak to a four-year contract.  Novak is a native son of San Diego who is thrilled to remain with the Bolts.  Hear what he had to say during a press conference to announce the signing, and then check out a gallery of some of his best photos right here.

Finally, the Chargers claimed running back Foswhitt “Fozzy” Whittaker later in the afternoon. Whittaker spent the final two weeks of the 2012 season on Arizona’s practice squad while Chargers’ offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt was the Cardinals’ head coach.

Be sure to check back tomorrow to see what moves the San Diego Chargers make on day 2 of free agency.
